HARISHCHANDRAGAD

Harishchandragad , a beautiful fort situated on the borders of Pune and Nagar. The fort is mostly famous for its one of the cliffs, Kokan-kada. One of the ways to reach fort is from Mumbai. One can get a bus from Kalyan to Junnar via Malshej ghat Get down at Khubi and start walking towards the dam.  This path on the wall takes one to Khireshwar. Tea and snacks are available in this village canteen.  After taking rest one can begin ascending the path that goes up the mountain.

A climb of an hour or so takes one to Tolar Khind.  The path that branches to the right goes to Kotul and Kolhe village.  Take a left upward route from this col.  After a small walk one comes across a rock. After rock climbing, the way to Harishchandragad is simple, just approximately 4 Km. Walking distance.  During monsoon one has to be very careful as there are chances of missing the route due to fog.  One can stay in the caves, just behind the temple. Cold water is available nearby the temple. Thus there is no problem for night stay, but keep the eatables safe from the rats.

Mangalganga river which originates near the temple flows down to pachnai. Walking alongside this river, one reaches Kedareshwar cave.  This cave is about three to four feet deep and at the centre of this cave is a massive Shivling.  On the right side of the temple is two peaks Rohidas and Taramati ( taller one).  The most enthralling place on this fort is undoubtedly the Kokan-kada which is a fifteen minute walk along the left side of the temple.   There is one more route which goes just in front of the temple to the left.  It takes around one and a half hour to Pachnai.  From here one can go to Pailichi wadi and stay at Kumshet.  From kumshet one can trek Kathribai and then climb down to Ratanwadi.  From here go to Shendi and then Igatpuri.
