RAJMACHI

Rajmachi ( Royal Plateau) is a twin peaked fort overlooking the Ulhas valley and the Bhor Ghat. It has good views of the surrounding countryside, and is a beautiful place to visit, particularly in the monsoons, when there are a lot of waterfalls and streams all around. There are two routes for Rajmachi, one is from Karjat which is bit tougher and other from Lonavala which is more popular. It is a 20km flat walk to the plateau at the base of the twin peaks, though the straight line distance from Lonavala would be about 10km. As one continues up the hillside to Tungarli there is a dam and lake and on the northern end of the lake, one can see Tungarli village. The trail then leads up to a small pass from where Rajmachi fort is visible. The path then descends and joins a dirt track that winds its way along the crest of the hill and disappears into the forests this is the only track, which leads to Rajmachi fort, there are no shortcuts. After an hours walk one comes to a big stream, crossing this the trail leads one to a bifurcation after 45 minutes.  The right trail goes to Kondeshwar via Valvand village and the left to Rajmachi.  After half an hour  one comes across a big nala where you can get  hot tea served by the villager.  From here Udhewadi which is at the base is around 45 minutes., where one can get plain, hot and tasty Maharashtrian food. Rented accomodation is also available there. The plateau is at a height of about 700m. The taller of the twin peaks is about 130m higher than the plateau, whereas the other one is about 80m higher. They are called Shreevardhan and Manoranjan respectively. Both of them are easy to climb from the village. A temple is situated on a col between the two peaks. Broad steps lead up Shreevardhan from the col. The steps can be a bit slippery to climb in the monsoon, and one or two stretches of the route are slightly exposed. One can see water tanks, storerooms and ruins of the fort. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the highest point of Shreevardhan from the village. A flagpole is situated here.

The return route from Rajmachi is much easier to follow. The trail is steeper and one needs to be very careful. One needs to start from Udhewadi village and follow a well-defined trail, on the hill's western slopes. One can find arrows marked at regular and these arrows marks lead way down until one reaches Kondana village in about two hours.
Trekker's can take an interesting diversion half way down the hillside, and follow a trail, which leads to the ruins of
Kondana Caves. These are rock cut Buddhist caves with a Stupa, Chaitya, Vihara and sculptures. An earthquake destroyed the floor of the caves and has left the pillars suspended from the ceiling, without support from the base.
From the Kondana village walk for a kilometre till one arrives at Kondivde proper (bus stop). , catch a rickshaw or bus and then a local train back to onward destination
